Students in the Event Management are planning “Wicket For Women,” a charity cricket tournament to help Girls on the Run.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that instils young girls with self-esteem and strong values through health education, said Erika Bojc, program co-ordinator for Girls on the Run.

“When Humber College approached us with this opportunity, we were honoured and thrilled to be the charitable recipient of this program,” said Bojc.

Four teams will compete in the tournament that’s arranged by students, with each making a donation of $25.

The event will also feature Asian-inspired dishes for sale with all proceeds going towards the charity, said Jeremy Trueman, a group organizer.

“There will be samosas, spring rolls and onion bhajis which is like a onion ring,” said Trueman.

“Prizes will also be given out to the best players and winning team as well,” he said.

The tourism and hospitality management program requires students to plan and execute an event within Humber or the GTA.

“This is an opportunity for the students to apply what they learned during class in real life,” said Rebecca Cotter, instructor for the program.

Cotter said she has already had previous experience with the Girls on the Run since it was a charity beneficiary for a course she did in January.

“Girls on the Run works well with students at all of the events,” said Cotter.

The event will start at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 in the Humber North gym and will also be streamed live through the Humber Athletics website.
