When Humber students vote in the Humber Student Federation election next week, they may recognize a name on the ballot.
If first-year business administration student Shabana Kaker, 19, is elected Vice-President Administration for North Campus, she will follow in the footsteps of older sister and current HSF President Shugufa Kaker, who previously served as VP Campus Life.
The two sisters live together and are very close, said Shugufa, 22.
“She’s like a best friend.”
Shabana, credits her sister for getting involved in college politics and seeking the $18,000-a-year position.
“I see how much dedication she has to her job and it makes me want to be devoted to something,” said Shabana.
During the two-week campaign that ends tomorrow, Shugufa, who earns $34,000-a-year as President was not allowed to be involved in activities supporting her sister.
“She talked to me and guided me before I decided to run. Right now she can’t really help me,” said Shabana adding that she doesn’t think name recognition will give her an advantage in the election.
“People might recognize the last name when they actually go to vote, what makes a difference is taking the time to meet students,” she said.
But Richard Chan, 20, also running for VP Administration thinks family ties do matter.
“It’s like the son of a famous actor, of course it helps them, but it’s not their fault,” said Chan.
Another VP Administration candidate, Stephanie Butler, said she sees no advantage from the Kakers being related .
Siblings running for HSF positions is not new to Humber.
Current VP Administration at Lakeshore, Kristen Arcega’s, followed in her older sister’s footsteps, Elisha Arcega, who had the job for the 2007/2008 term.
