Students should already be on the hunt for summer jobs, said both organizers and employers at a job fair on North Campus.
“The early bird gets the worm,” said Karen Fast, manager of Humber’s Career Centre.
“Get your resumes ready and get out and start pounding the pavement,” said Christine Colosimo, an employment adviser at the centre who organized last Wednesday’s fair.
Although midterms may be monopolizing most of students’ time, some students got the message.
“I’ve been really busy, but I’ve just started looking for a summer job,” said Varun Veer, 28, a first-year exercise science and lifestyle management student.
“There are good employers who can hire, who can see my resume and give nice feedback to me.”
Dozens of students attended the job fair in the Student Centre, where about 20 employers had set up their booths.
The threat of a teachers strike made organizing the fair more difficult, said Colosimo.
“We weren’t really sure if we were going to have students here,” she said
“So the number of employers isn’t as high as I really hoped to have because it was a quick thing,” said Colosimo.
Regional manager of University First Class Painters Ryan Miller represented his company at one booth.
He advised students to be professional when looking for a job.
“Always have a resume ready any time. And make sure you have a good email address and voice mail because if you give out something that sounds weird, it throws people off,” said Miller, whose company hires hundreds of college students every summer to paint houses in the GTA.
“We are looking for students who are highly motivated, with a competitive attitude, and most importantly who are willing to learn.”
