Words will come alive next Wednesday when Lakeshore Campus hosts a book reading by Giller Prize shortlisted author, and former Humber student, Anthony De Sa.
De Sa said he is looking forward to the free event, which is open to the public and will begin in the Assembly Hall at 12 p.m.
“I think it’s what every writer really wants. To have that kind of audience that is informed, that has read your book and can come at you with questions,” he said.
De Sa wrote Barnacle Love after taking creative writing courses through Humber’s continuing education program.
The book went on to be shortlisted for the Giller and the Toronto Book Awards.
De Sa said he still feels connected to Humber.
“I don’t think that I ever really left,” he said. “I continue to work closely with Humber.”
Liberal arts and sciences professor Ben Labovitch has been arranging book readings by Canadian authors for 31 years.
His class studied Barnacle Love before and will use the event as a learning experience.
Labovitch said he tries to pick authors he thinks his students will enjoy studying.
“I’ll bring a writer in each semester,” Labovitch said. “That writer becomes the highlight of that course.”
Dean of the School of Creative and Performing Arts Joe Kertes said events like the reading help students learn and benefits Humber.
“We’re always thrilled when Humber students excel and do well in the world.”
